How to Set Up Your Printer Wirelessly

Works for PIXMA, imageCLASS, MAXIFY, and SELPHY printers. Takes about 10 minutes.

Before you begin: Have your WiFi network name and password ready. Use a 2.4GHz network — printers do not support 5GHz. Also remove all orange packing tape from inside the printer before powering on.

Unbox and Prepare the Printer

Before powering on, complete these preparation steps:

  • Remove all orange tape from inside and outside the printer
  • Open the ink cartridge access door and install all cartridges — push down until each one clicks
  • For PIXMA G / GX (MegaTank): fill the ink tanks from the bottles included in the box
  • Load plain A4 or letter-size paper into the cassette or rear tray
  • Connect the power cord and press the Power button
✅ Tip: The printer will automatically print an alignment page on first startup. Set this aside — you may need it to confirm print quality later.

Navigate to Wireless LAN Setup on the Printer

Using the printer's LCD touchscreen or button menu:

  • Press the Menu or Setup button (wrench icon on some models)
  • Select Device Settings (or LAN Settings)
  • Select LAN Settings → Wireless LAN Setup
  • Choose Standard Setup to scan for available WiFi networks
✅ No touchscreen? On button-only models (e.g. PIXMA MG2522), press and hold the WiFi button until the alarm lamp flashes, then follow the WPS method in Step 2b below.

⚡ Alternative — WPS Button Method (No Password Needed)

WPS Button Setup (Fastest Method)

If your router has a WPS button, you can skip entering the password entirely:

  • On the printer, hold the WiFi button for 3 seconds — the WiFi lamp will blink blue
  • Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your router (usually on the back)
  • The printer's WiFi lamp will stop blinking and stay solid blue — it's connected
  • Continue to Step 3 to install the driver on your computer
⚠️ WPS not working? Your router may have WPS disabled. Log into your router admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1) to enable it, or use the Standard Setup method in Step 2 instead.

Select Your WiFi Network and Enter Password

After choosing Standard Setup, the printer will scan and display nearby WiFi networks:

  • Select your home WiFi network name from the list
  • Enter your WiFi password using the on-screen keyboard — use the arrow keys or touchscreen
  • Select OK to confirm
  • The WiFi lamp or icon on the printer will turn solid blue when connected
✅ Can't find your network? If your network is hidden (SSID not broadcast), select "Others" and enter the network name manually.

Download and Install the printer Driver

🖥️ Windows 10 / 11
  • Go to the official support site and search your printer model (e.g. "PIXMA MG3620")
  • Select Windows 10 or 11 as your operating system
  • Download the Full Driver & Software Package
  • Run the installer (.exe file) and follow the on-screen prompts
  • When prompted for connection type, select Wireless Connection
  • The installer will detect the printer on your network and complete the installation
🍎 macOS (Sonoma / Sequoia)
  • First connect the printer to WiFi using the printer's menu (Steps 1–3)
  • Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners → Add Printer or Scanner
  • Your printer should appear automatically via AirPrint — click Add
  • For full feature support (scanning, ink levels, maintenance): also download the driver from the official support site and select macOS

Print a Test Page to Confirm Setup

After installation completes, confirm everything is working:

  • Windows: Go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → click your printer → Print test page
  • Mac: Open any document, click File → Print, select your printer, and print
  • From the printer: Press and hold the Resume/Stop button for 5 seconds to print a nozzle check pattern
🎉 All done! If the test page prints cleanly, your printer is fully set up and ready to use.

Printer Setup via USB Cable

Prefer a wired connection? USB setup is quick and doesn't require WiFi.

Do Not Connect USB Yet

Start the driver installation from the official support site first. When the installer asks you to connect the USB cable, it will prompt you — connecting early can cause driver errors.

Run the printer Driver Installer

Download and run the full driver package for your model. When prompted for connection type, select USB Connection instead of Wireless.

Connect USB When Prompted

The installer will tell you exactly when to plug in the USB cable. Connect it between the printer and your computer when instructed. Windows will detect and install the device automatically.

Print a Test Page

Go to Windows Settings → Printers & scanners → select your printer → Print test page. A successful print confirms USB setup is complete.

Fill ink tanks before first use. Fill slowly and cap bottles completely. Wireless setup works the same as other PIXMA models via the menu.

📠 PIXMA TR4720

All-in-one with fax. Set up WiFi first, then configure fax via the Fax menu. Requires a phone line connection for fax functionality.

imageCLASS Setup Notes

imageCLASS wireless setup uses the same menu path: Settings → Network → Wireless LAN Setup. However, imageCLASS models also support a USB method for initial setup followed by switching to wireless — useful in office environments with IT-managed networks.

For imageCLASS MF445dw, MF743Cdw, and similar models: after WiFi connection, install the driver using the MF Scan Utility package from the official support site to unlock the full scan and fax features.

MAXIFY Setup Notes

MAXIFY printers are designed for high-volume office printing. Setup is the same as PIXMA, but the menu interface has more options.

💡 MAXIFY tip: For best performance, assign a static IP address to your MAXIFY printer after setup (Printer Menu → Network → TCP/IP Settings → Manual). This prevents the printer from changing IP addresses and dropping off your computer's printer list.

Printer Troubleshooting

Quick fixes for the most common printer problems.

📴 Printer Offline

  1. Restart the printer and your router
  2. In Windows, go to Printers & scanners → your printer → Open print queue
  3. Click Printer menu → uncheck "Use Printer Offline"
  4. Cancel any stuck print jobs in the queue
  5. Press Win+R → type services.msc → restart Print Spooler
  6. If persists: remove printer and re-add via Add a printer

📄 Printer Printing Blank Pages

  1. Check ink cartridges — remove and reinstall firmly
  2. Remove orange tape from any new cartridges
  3. Run Print Head Cleaning from the printer utility software
  4. Print a nozzle check pattern to see which heads are clogged
  5. Run 2–3 cleaning cycles if needed (allow 5 minutes between each)
  6. If still blank, the print head may need replacement — contact official support

📶 Printer Won't Connect to WiFi

  1. Confirm you're using 2.4GHz — printers don't support 5GHz
  2. Move printer closer to the router
  3. Re-enter WiFi password carefully — check for typos
  4. On printer menu: Network Settings → Reset LAN Settings → redo setup
  5. Try WPS button method as alternative
  6. Assign a static IP after successful connection to prevent future drops

🖊️ Cartridge Not Recognized

  1. Power off the printer completely
  2. Remove the unrecognized cartridge
  3. Clean the gold contacts on the cartridge with a dry lint-free cloth
  4. Clean the contacts inside the printer carriage
  5. Reinstall cartridge until it clicks, then power on
  6. If using non-OEM cartridge: try an official OEM cartridge — firmware updates may block third-party ink

🔴 Error Code 5100

  1. Power off the printer
  2. Open the front cover and check for any paper scraps or debris
  3. Check the printhead carriage is moving freely and not obstructed
  4. Remove all cartridges and reinsert them one by one
  5. Power on and run a head cleaning cycle
  6. If error persists: reset the printer by holding Stop/Reset for 10 seconds

🐢 Printer Printing Very Slowly

  1. In Printer Preferences, change Quality to "Standard" or "Draft"
  2. Turn off "Quiet Mode" if enabled
  3. Clear the print queue of old or large jobs
  4. Update the printer driver from the official support site
  5. Restart the Print Spooler service
  6. For wireless: assign a static IP to prevent reconnection delays
